(Wilmington, DE) – William M. Remington, Director of Revenue announced today that Stephen G. Lang pleaded guilty before Judge Jan R. Jurden in NCC Superior Court for filing false income tax returns with the State of Delaware.
Lang, 59, pleaded guilty to 2 felony counts, including one count of attempting to evade State of Delaware personal income tax for filing a false return for tax year 1996 and one count of filing fraud and false statements for filing three amended returns with the Division of Revenue for the years 1993 through 1995.
Lang was indicted on February 11, 2002 by a NCC Grand Jury and charged with five felony counts of attempting to evade state of Delaware personal income taxes and an additional felony count of filing false statements with the Division of Revenue. He was a fugitive until August 12, 2002,when he was arrested in the State of New Jersey.
An investigation conducted by the Delaware Division of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Unit revealed that Lang, formerly employed as a lab technician with Dupont, earned more than $210,000 during the years 1996 through 2000. During this period of time, Lang filed income tax returns that claimed no Delaware adjusted gross income when in fact he owed more than $10,000 of state income taxes.
Lang was sentenced to 2 years in jail, suspended for 2 years probation and also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $8,240 which is the total unpaid personal taxes owed to the state. In addition, he was ordered to pay a $500 court-imposed fine.
